Healthy aging and strength training

by David

As we all know and experience over time the slowing down effects of aging, whether it is our hearing, vision, our strength and definitely our energy. The thing that really can be bothersome and at times discouraging is our memory of how things used to be. If you were athletic when you were younger than you would definitely see a pretty good decline in your performance in general fitness and any games that you play and that is certainly understandable. Even if you weren’t athletic seeing simple daily task challenging can be difficult to take. You can’t change the natural process of getting older but you can do things like strength training and aerobic training to see that you are aging in a healthy manner.

The idea of healthy aging goes way beyond just strength training or exercising in particular. It also deals with following a healthy and nutritious diet along with keeping your mind sharp. The mental aspects of healthy aging are probably the most important because if you are depressed then you probably wouldn’t exercise or eat right.

Healthy aging is something that you are in charge of from the very beginning. Whether you are mentally and physically fit as you grow older depends upon you understanding the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Another motivational factor is the consequences of not exercising and not eating the right foods and that could serious and life threatening illness such as heart disease and depression.

So make a commitment to starting an exercise program that includes aerobic (walking, running, riding a bike) and strength training (lifting weight or using exercise bands). Check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.
