Senior fitness and COPD

Breathing problems needless to say can be rather dangerous because of the interruption of oxygen into our lungs. This can be especially bad for the elderly or senior citizens. COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is often found in the elderly, especially among smokers. While COPD isn’t curable there are things that can be done to control it like exercise such as walking and strength training.
COPD is caused by damage being done to the lungs which is usually from smoking. It can also be classified as a mixture of 2 specific diseases chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Symptoms of it are coughing and shortness of breath among other things. If you have these these symptoms then you need to go to your doctor for a checkup. COPD is usually diagnosed in older folks.
Obviously the best thing that you can do to slow down COPD is stop smoking although prior damage to your lungs will remain. There are also medicines that can be prescribed as well. Exercise like walking will help you breathe better and gain more wind.
Strength training can also be valuable in controlling COPD. But just remember that since you are dealing with a condition that affects your breathing you should definitely receive instructions on how to breathe while exercising and on how much exercise you should be doing.
If you want information about a pulmonary rehabilitation center near you go to the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
